The Tamur Expedition
Beautiful short trek and continuous whitewater in East Nepal
In
the east of Nepal the snows of Kanchenjunga feed a challenging less-known
cousin of the Sun Kosi. The Tamur combines one of the best of short
Himalayan treks, offering amazing mountain views, with an exhilarating
river expedition.
Picking up our team of sprightly porters at Basantapur we trek through ancient moss-covered rhododendron forests and sunlit meadows. Pearls of sweat line the porters’ heads as we crest the 10,000' / 3,000m pass above the sacred lake at Gupha Pokhari, to be greeted by stunning views of the Kanchenjunga massif, Makalu and Everest. Descending through sinuous waves of rice snaking its way into the distance.
At Dobhan the three main tributaries of the Tamur join their forces, combining the racing rivers of the mountains to the north. In early fall the rapids on the Tamur are unrivaled. This river is a whitewater delight with one rapid leading into the next.
Local people are a fascinating collage oftribes and castes who have perfected the brewing of their favorite drink, tungba, to a fine art....
The last few days where the river turns back tothe west is phenomenal. Towering waves leap skyward, with seemingly endless rapids surging through steep canyon walls to finally cascade into the Sun Kosi and meander to the sea.

Itinerary
Day 1 Arrive Kathmandu.
Day 2 Fly to Biratnagar; drive to Basantapur (Camp).
Day 3-5 Trek to Dobhan
Days 6-11 Rafting and exploring the Tamur.
Day 12 Raft to take-out at Chatara; drive to Biratnagar
and fly to Kathmandu.
Day 13 At leisure in Kathmandu.
Day 14 Depart for onward destination.
