Quaint,
charming and rustic, the sub-tropical valley of Pokhara is the starting
point of treks in the Annapurna region. Lying at an average elevation
of 3,000' / 900m, it is considerably warmer than Kathmandu and receives
some of the heaviest rainfall in Nepal. The snow-capped summits
of the Annapurna Himal tower 23,000' / 7,000m above the valley to
the north, with the beautiful pyramidal peak of Machhapuchhare (Fish
Tail, 22,937' / 6,993m),
only 18mi / 29km away, dominating the northern horizon. The most
popular tourist destination in Nepal after Kathmandu, Pokhara is
also known for its lakes, most famous of which is the Phewa Tal.
The panorama of the entire Annapurna Himal reflected on the placid
waters of the lake form an indelible impression on many a visitor.
